Manama: A Kuwaiti court on Sunday sentenced blogger Hamid Al Khalidi to two years in prison for undermining the status of the emir.

Kuwait has put several bloggers and suspects on trial for posting remarks deemed offensive to the emir, Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, and for taking part in illegal assemblies based on cases filed by the state security.

The country was last year rocked by several protests and rallies, mainly by the opposition, to press for the cancellation of a decree that amended the 2006 electoral law and reduced the number of candidates a voter could elect from four to one.

The street movement was also used to press changes to the constitution.
