Manama: Bahrain’s High Military Court on Monday sentenced six defendants, including a soldier, to death on charges of forming a terrorist group, attempting to assassinate the Commander-in-Chief of Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) and carrying out terror attacks.

According to the case documents, 18 suspects were implicated in the terror attacks and group formation, but only ten were remanded in custody.

The other eight were fugitives in Bahrain or abroad in Iran and Iraq, a report carried by Bahrain News Agency (BNA) said.

The six defendants condemned to death were also sentenced to 15 years in prison and to having their citizenship revoked.

The court also sentenced seven defendants to seven years in jail with the revocation of their citizenship.

The remaining five suspects were acquitted for lack of evidence.

The trial was reportedly attended by representatives of human rights groups, the media and relatives of the defendants.

All the defendants have the right to challenge the verdicts before the Military Court of Appeals and at a final stage at the Military Court of Cassation.
