Manama: Bahrain's foreign minister on Monday warned that an imposter has opened a fake account on Twitter, the social networking website, using his name and picture.

"There is a fake account in my name using the same picture and bio," Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmad Al Khalifa wrote on his account. "Tweeps beware. I just reported it to Twitter. The fake account is khalidalkhaIifa...replacing the second l with a capital I."

The warning by Shaikh Khalid, who has 31,881 followers, drew a wave of sympathy.

"You have the verified account. I don't think anyone will take it seriously. There's only ONE, real Khalid that we all love," a follower wrote.

Shaikh Khalid, who marked his 51st birthday on Sunday, has regularly used his account to communicate significant political developments in Bahrain and the region.

The fake account issue is the second for a Bahraini minister in as many days.

On Sunday, the interior ministry warned that a fake account was opened in the name of Shaikh Rashid Bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, the interior minister.

The account, which featured a picture of the minister, was used to post statements warning that those arrested during the unrest that hit Bahrain in February and March would face tough punishments.
