Dubai: Netflix’s biggest animated hit ever, KPop Demon Hunters, is officially getting a sequel, but fans will need to be patient.

According to Bloomberg, KPop Demon Hunters 2 is expected to release in 2029, giving the streaming giant and its partners enough time to build the franchise properly after the massive, unexpected global success of the first film.

When KPop Demon Hunters launched in 2025, no one, not Netflix, retailers, or even toy companies, predicted it would become the company’s most-watched movie of all time. The film’s viral songs, lively animation and K-pop–inspired characters turned it into a worldwide phenomenon, especially among younger audiences. But its surprise success also meant the industry was unprepared.

Toymakers didn’t have dolls, action figures or plushies ready for the holidays, and many brands only started approaching Netflix after the film became a hit.

Since, animated films take years to produce, Netflix has moved slowly but strategically. Bloomberg reports that Netflix has now locked in deals with the original directors and Sony’s animation division, clearing the way for full production on the sequel. The goal is to build a long-lasting franchise, not just a one-hit wonder supported by toys, products, costumes and themed collaborations that fans have been demanding.

In the meantime, Netflix is focused on keeping the franchise alive. The streamer has re-released the movie in cinemas for limited sing-along weekends and partnered with brands for themed snacks, merchandise and even theme park zones in South Korea. More short-form content may also be on the way to keep fans engaged until the sequel lands.

So while KPop Demon Hunters 2 won’t arrive until 2029, Netflix is preparing to make it bigger, bolder and even more global than the original.
