Labubu, the wildly popular doll, is a strong favourite with Hollywood and Bollywood stars

Dubai: A movie based on the wildly popular Labubu plush doll line is in early development at Sony, according to reports.
Deadline claims The Culver City studio has acquired the feature film rights to the Chinese designer toy, though no creative team is attached yet, and it remains undecided whether the project will be animated or live-action.
Labubu dolls were created in 2015 by Hong Kong–born, Europe-based designer Kasing Lung. The line was initially produced by How2Work before Chinese retailer Pop Mart took over in 2019, propelling the dolls into mainstream global popularity. Labubu is part of Lung’s The Monsters series, inspired by Nordic folklore.
While the dolls first gained a cult following in East and Southeast Asia, demand has surged worldwide — including in the U.S., where a black market sees rare figures selling for six-figure prices.
Pop Mart’s blind-box strategy, in which buyers don't know which doll they're getting until the box is opened, has helped drive scarcity and value. Sightings of celebrities like Blackpink’s Lisa wearing Labubu accessories have further boosted the brand’s appeal.
According to Pop Mart’s 2024 annual report, The Monsters line generated $430 million, accounting for 23.3% of the company’s revenue that year. In the first half of 2025, The Monsters brought in $670 million, representing nearly 35% of Pop Mart’s revenue.
