Dubai: Emirates has suspended all flights to Bali in Indonesia until further notice, the airline said on its website on Thursday, with volcanic ash closing the island's airport.

“Volcano Rinjani on the island of Lombok in Indonesia is currently erupting. The possible volcanic ash cloud in the vicinity has resulted in the closure of Denpasar (DPS / Bali) airport by authorities until further notice. As a result, all Emirates services (passengers and cargo) to and from Bali (DPS) have been suspended until further notice,” according to the airline.

This week, Emirates had to divert one flight bound for Bali to the Indonesia capital Jakarta and delayed other flights in and out of Bali because of the ash cloud.

Emirates passengers in Dubai bound for Bali have been given the option of rebooking their flight to Jakarta or returning their point of origin, the airline said.

Passengers in Bali will be contacted by Emirates on their travel options.

“We are closely monitoring the situation. We apologise for any inconvenience. The safety of our crew and passengers is our top priority,” the airline said.

Qatar Airways, which also flies to Bali, has not updated its travel alert on its website since Thursday.

The alert says, “Qatar Airways' flights to Denpasar Bali Airport (DPS) may be subject to diversions, delay or cancellations due to volcanic ash activity reported over the airfield.”
