Dubai: Seeking success in a place like the UAE gives one a reality check and tests one’s resolve to acheive one’s goals and dreams, a Dubai-based leadership coach and English author has said.

Speaking to XPRESS ahead of the launch of his newest book 100 Things Successful People Do, Nigel Cumberland said, “Dubai is filled with people who have made the decision to move here seeking some form of life success – be it for higher salaries, to find work more easily, to escape from the past, be free of cold weather, to live in the sun etc. It is as if when a person or family moves to Dubai, their desires, goals, needs and ambitions are probably at the forefront of their minds.”

Success defined

According to him, this can guide and drive someone to achieve such goals. Equally, a person may have arrived here with expectations that may be too high and cannot be fulfilled.

Cumberland, who himself came to Dubai from the UK five years ago, operates as a trainer and coach.

His latest book essentially explores how everyone can accomplish their own forms of success.

Defining success, he said, “There could be any number of possible aims, dreams, aspirations or goals. It’s very personal and unique to each one of us. One person’s greatest desire could be someone else’s idea of hell; you might want to be an award-winning chef while your best friend hates cooking. To be able to look back and say ‘I lived a successful life’ means successfully pursuing a myriad of aims and goals.”

Cumberland said he coaches people in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and across the region to succeed in leadership and work roles. He said, “I had already written books about management and leadership skills and felt that we all need a guidebook to help us achieve any kind of personal success. I had realised that there are common skills, behaviours and mindsets required to achieve any kind of goal - be it wealth, health, career, work, retirement, financial or family-related.”

He said he spent 12 months writing and editing the book which targets “everyone” and is being distributed globally very soon.
