ABU DHABI: Abu Dhabi Indian School has introduced lockers for students from grades one to eight.

A total of 3,000 lockers - one for each student - were installed last week at the school, which is the oldest in the Capital.

“Of late, several parents have been raising concerns about children struggling with heavy school bags, so we decided to give a locker to each student,” said school principal Neeraj Bhargava. “The children are very excited. One important lesson that school lockers teach kids is the responsibility of looking after their possessions and the importance of their belongings,” he said.

Move welcomed

Parents have welcomed the move, saying they are glad their children will not have to carry heavy books to school everyday.

“I have one child in grade six and another in grade eight. They have to climb two flights of stairs with bags that are really heavy. I am really happy with the introduction of lockers,” said a mother.

The father of a grade eight student said his son’s school bag weighed over eight kilograms. “This is more than even cabin baggage allowance. It’s such a big relief to learn that he has been spared the misery,” he said.

Doctors and physical therapists say that kids should carry no more than 10 to 15 per cent of their body weight in their packs.

The school principal said they are looking to install lockers for the remaining grades by next year.
