DUBAI If you are looking for something constructive to do this weekend, head to the Mercato Mall on Saturday evening and help identify areas that do not have wheelchair access in the neighbourhood.

As Shobhika Kalra, founder of Wings of Angelz, a social initiative aimed at making the world more wheelchair-friendly, called upon volunteers to join in the effort, she said participation in the event titled Key Information Technology Year of Zayed Ramp Day would go a long way in creating greater awareness about the need for ramps in the city.

She said Wings of Angelz, which had helped build over 750 ramps across Dubai so far, had through earlier Ramp Days, shortlisted 45 more places that needed them.

“This time around, we will also have a spare wheelchair on which normal people can sit and move around, so they can better appreciate the difficulties faced by those who are wheelchair-bound,” said Kalra, who suffers from a rare degenerative disorder and is confined to a wheelchair herself.

“On Ramp Day, we divide volunteers who turn up into groups of three so they can look out for places that don’t have wheelchair access. We then add these palces to our database and work on getting the necessary ramps constructed,” she said.

The event, which starts at 5.30pm, will go on till 8.15pm.

“We request volunteers to meet at the main entrance of the mall, in the parking lot,” she added.
