Dubai: In the world of social media fame and fortune, few figures stir as much debate as Ququ Big Woman, a controversial influencer from China who's turning heads and raising eyebrows. Renowned for her bold teachings on snagging wealthy partners, this self-proclaimed “McKinsey of relationships” is now at the centre of a storm, facing a staggering fine of 7.58 million yuan (around US$1.1 million) for alleged tax evasion.

With an annual income that soars to 142 million yuan (about US$20 million), her empire is as captivating as it is controversial—making one wonder: how much is too much in the pursuit of love and wealth?

According to the media reports, the scandal came to light through China’s State Taxation Administration, which revealed Le Chuanqu's case, among several others, that have recently attracted significant public interest. As one of the country’s most polarising internet personalities, Le transitioned from a singing career to offering strategic advice on dating, asserting that relationships and marriage can be used as tools for social and financial advancement.

Le's live-streamed sessions gained widespread attention in August 2023, as her provocative take on dating went viral. She offers various online courses, the most basic of which is dubbed “valuable relationships,” priced at 3,580 yuan (approximately US$500) for a series of 24 classes, all aimed at mastering the intricate dynamics of social, romantic, and financial relationships.

For those seeking personalised guidance during her live streams, a one-on-one consultation costs 1,143 yuan (about US$160), while her exclusive coaching packages can exceed 10,000 yuan (around US$1,400) per month. Despite facing significant backlash from state media in 2023 for endorsing toxic relationship dynamics and spreading dubious values, her business model adapted successfully, moving away from public exposure while retaining a dedicated following.

In December of the previous year, her team announced an increase in membership fees for her private group, “Girlfriends Alliance,” from 129,800 yuan (US$18,000) to 199,800 yuan, with potential members now required to undergo an interview to join.

According to the Shanghai Municipal Tax Service, authorities utilised advanced data analysis techniques to reveal inconsistencies in Le’s financial reporting. Despite operating a thriving private consultation service, she reported a personal income of just 600,000 yuan (about US$82,000) over the last two years, a stark discrepancy compared to her actual revenue.

As a result, tax officials in Shanghai have mandated that Le pay a considerable sum of 7.58 million yuan in back taxes, fines, and late fees. In response to the situation, Le has publicly acknowledged the negative societal impact of her actions and committed to adhering to regulations and fulfilling her tax obligations moving forward.

Online reactions to her case have been largely critical, with some users expressing their belief that she deserves jail time, while others pointed out that such groups often target wealthy men. One observer emphasised the disparity in perceptions of wealth, noting that what seems extravagant to ordinary individuals may be trivial to the affluent. They remarked on the prevalence of women like Le, highlighting the vast number of wealthy men available in this context.

@SocialCritique22: "7.58 million yuan? That's a hefty fine! It's about time influencers are held accountable for their actions. #TaxEvasion"

@RealityCheck89: "Honestly, how can she justify her income vs. tax reports? This makes a mockery of the hardworking individuals who pay their dues. #DoubleStandards"

@WealthWatcher: "It's crazy how some people view relationships as transactional. Love should never be about money or social status! #TrueLove"
