A Greek woman has filed for divorce after asking ChatGPT to interpret her husband’s coffee cup.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot allegedly claimed her husband was fantasizing about a younger woman and that he was destined to start a relationship with her. It also added that this woman was determined to break up their family.

According to Greek City Times, the woman, married for 12 years with two children, turned to the AI chatbot for a digital version of tasseography, the traditional art of reading coffee grounds.

Allegedly inspired by a social media trend, she made Greek coffee for herself and her husband, photographed their cups, and uploaded the images to ChatGPT for a “reading.”

Taking the reading seriously, the wife immediately asked her husband to leave, told their children they were getting divorced, and served him legal papers just three days later.

The husband shared his story on the Greek morning show To Proino, saying his wife tends to follow trends and has a history of being drawn to mystical or spiritual practices. “A few years ago, she got really into astrology after visiting an astrologer. It took a year to convince her none of it was real,” he said.

His lawyer has stated that AI-generated claims have no legal standing and plans to contest the divorce. Seasoned tasseography practitioners have also weighed in, explaining that proper coffee cup readings require analyzing not just the grounds, but also the foam and the saucer - elements ChatGPT cannot interpret.
