Fan admits actions misguided but claims they were a spur-of-the-moment reaction
Cairo: An Egyptian football fan has stirred controversy online and within his own family after celebrating his team’s emphatic win with a topless dance in public.
The incident occurred after Malyat Kafr El Zayat, a provincial club in Egypt’s Nile Delta, defeated rivals Tala 5-0 in a second division match — a victory that brought them closer to qualifying for the Egyptian Premier League.
In a moment of unrestrained euphoria, the 40-year-old fan stripped down to just his underwear and danced in the stands to drumbeats, cheered on by fellow supporters.
A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media.
However, the man’s spontaneous display of joy did not sit well with his family, particularly his wife, who has reportedly filed for divorce. His behavior was widely condemned as inappropriate and a breach of public decency.
The fan later admitted his actions were misguided but claimed they were a spur-of-the-moment reaction driven by his deep loyalty to the club. He also noted that the team had supported him financially during a recent surgery, making the victory even more personal.
“I didn’t mean to disrespect traditions or offend anyone,” he said, pleading with his family for forgiveness.
Meanwhile, Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Ashraf Sobhi, has ordered an official investigation into the incident. According to Al Masry Al Youm, the ministry will determine whether the act was solely the fan’s doing or if others, including club officials, played a role. Disciplinary measures will follow based on the findings.
