Baghdad: An army major was among seven people killed by improvised bombs in Iraq on Tuesday, officials said.
In central Baghdad a bomb targeting the convoy of deputy planning minister Mahdi Al Alaq killed a passer-by and wounded three others, but the official and his guards escaped unhurt, medics and an interior ministry official said.
Another improvised bomb on the outskirts of Baquba 60 kilometres north of the capital killed six soldiers including an army major in overnight violence, security officials in the city said.
Violence in Iraq has plunged dramatically since its peak in 2006 and 2007, but casualties from insurgent and military action are still frequent.
