Puppies lose mother, cat adopts them

Who says cats and dogs can't get along? Smegil, a two-year-old cat in Amman, Jordan, has adopted four puppies who lost their terrier dog mother to a speeding car.

Interestingly, both Smegil and the deceased dog gave birth to two kittens and four puppies respectively on February 14, ie Valentine's Day. Unfortunately, two days after the delivery, the dog went out of her owner's house and got run over by a car.

Mohammad Al Hammouri, the owner of the cat, told XPRESS over the telephone that the feline has been feeding the puppies along with her two greyish-brown kittens since then.

He said the cat hisses at anyone who approaches the puppies.

Al Hammouri said that when the dog died, his neighbour didn't know what to do with the puppies and handed them over to him. “At first, my neighbour tried to bottle-feed them but it did not work out.''

Al Hammouri had a feeling Smegil would be a suitable mother to the puppies and to his delight Smegil took to the puppies as her own. “The cat smelt one puppy for five minutes before taking it under her wing,'' said Al Hammouri, adding that the other three were also welcomed after a brief interaction.
