Dubai: Social media users have applauded the heroic effort of a Saudi national who prevented a major disaster from breaking out at a petrol station.

The video of the incident, which went viral on social networking sites, showed a white car crashing into the petrol station. A fire then broke out at one of the petrol pumps, and almost immediately burst into a large orange ball of flames.

The incident happened during the early hours of Tuesday in the city of Yanbu, located in the Al Madina Province of western Saudi Arabia.

Thanks to the quick thinking of a man nearby, who was identified as Thamer Fayez Al Marzouki, the fire was soon put out with the help of a fire extinguisher.

On Thursday, the chairman and chief executive officer of Yanbu Aramco Sinopec Refining Company honoured the employee with a certificate of appreciation.

Eng Mohammad Nagash said the heroic act “reflected the company’s values that above all, protected the public’s safety”.

Social media users took to Twitter to praise Al Marzouki’s courageous act, and posted dozens of positive comments in recognition of his bravery.

Abu Thamer Al Harai said: “Courage, trust and most importantly, the calm behaviour of this man shows what a true hero he is, and he should be regarded as our country’s hero.”

Memes also flooded social networking sites that were also accompanied with the Arabic hashtag #hero_wears_yellow_vest.
