Riyadh: The historic district of Alwajh offers visitors a unique glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Known for its distinctive architectural style, Alwajh seamlessly blends traditional Hijazi elements with subtle modern influences, narrating tales of its vibrant past. Strategically located, Alwajh thrived for centuries as a major commercial hub and bustling port.

SPA reports that its history dates back to the early Islamic era, serving as a critical stopover for pilgrims traveling from Egypt and the Levant to the holy city of Mecca. The district also played a pivotal role in maritime trade, acting as a key center for the export and import of goods.

The district’s architecture, characterised by locally sourced limestone buildings, features ornate windows and intricate wooden balconies that exemplify traditional Hijazi design. Narrow, stone-paved alleys wind through the area, enhancing its historic charm.

SPA highlighted the cultural significance of the historic mosques within Alwajh, some of which are over 200 years old, standing as enduring symbols of the region's deep-rooted heritage.
