Cross-border fire and shelling have been common since the coalition begain campaign in Yemen

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s military says a high-ranking officer has been killed in the south of the kingdom, near the border with Yemen.

The official Saudi Press Agency reported early Sunday that Brig. Ebrahim Omar Ebrahim Hamzi died in the hospital of injuries sustained while carrying out his duties in Jizan. Hamzi was deputy commander of the army’s Eighth Brigade.

The military did not say how he was killed, but Jizan province was targeted with heavy cross-border fire from Yemen’s Al Houthi militants on Saturday. Authorities earlier said the shelling killed a senior Saudi border guard commander and a soldier.

Cross-border fire and shelling have been common since a Saudi-led coalition began a campaign of air strikes in March against Yemen’s Al Houthis.
