Cairo: Saudi municipal authorities have shut down a sports club for women for violating rules in place to stem the spread of the new coronavirus, Okaz newspaper has reported.

The club in the central governorate of Al Kharj, had failed to observe precautions against the spread of COVID-19, the report said.

The violations, exposed during an inspection tour, included using workout tools without heeding preventive measures.

In June, Saudi Arabia allowed all businesses, including fitness centres, to resume their activities amid strict steps against COVID-19 under a plan for gradual return to normal life in the kingdom.

Authorities have repeatedly called for observing hygiene rules and launched field inspection campaigns nationwide to ensure compliance.

In recent months, Saudi authorities have booked and closed several facilities and businesses for infringing health rules
