Manama: Saudi authorities are seeking the arrest of an Egyptian man who has been working as a doctor for ten years with a bogus degree in urology.

The fake doctor, who is currently practising, is in Egypt on annual leave and the security agencies have been asked to arrest him on his return to Saudi Arabia, Saudi daily Okaz reported on Wednesday.

The police were alerted after the Saudi Commission for Health Specialities discovered that the degree from an Egyptian university allegedly awarded in 2000 was fake and started procedures to revoke his papers. The doctor was registered to work in hospitals in Al Qasim.

Sources told the daily that in case the doctor failed to return, the Saudi embassy in Cairo would be requested to ask Interpol to intervene to assist with his arrest.

Comments on social media praised the move to take legal action against the fake doctor, although they expressed shock that he could last ten years in hospitals without being discovered. They added that greater and closer scrutiny was needed in order to ensure that only deserving doctors could be hired.

Several commenters said they looked forward to more stringent action against all Saudi nationals and foreigners who landed jobs thanks to bogus degrees and diplomas.
