Muscat: Two Qatar University students — an Omani and a Qatari — died on Tuesday after drowning in a swimming pool attached to the university’s dormitory for female students, according to the university’s Twitter account.
The Omani student identified as Reem Al Kalbani, 19, was found dead in the pool with her Qatari friend, Noora Al Hidous.
Qatari media reports said that Al Hindous was trying to save Al Kalbani when she drowned, too.
Authorities took the bodies of the two students to conduct autopsies. The university said that it is following up with the authorities regarding the incident and investigation is under way.
“Qatar University extends its heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of students Reem Al Kalbani and Noora Al Hidous. We pray to God to help their bereaved families to bear this great loss,” the university tweeted.
D. Hassan Al Dirham, President of Qatar University, mourned the loss of his students on his twitter account. “We are shocked by the death of the students Reem Al Kalbani and Noora Al Hidous. I ask God to have mercy on them, and to grant their families patience and fortitude,” Al Dirham wrote.
Qataris launched a hashtag on Twitter titled ‘Reem Al Kalbani and Nourah Al Hidous’ to share their grief and offer condolences on the death of the two students.
