Dubai: A court in Qatar has sentenced a Gulf national to 25 years in jail after his attempt to rob a house led to the death of the owner and to the stabbing of his son.
The criminal court said that it ruled 10 years in prison for the attempted murder, 10 years for causing the death of the house owner and five years for trespassing and entering a house in the evening with the purpose of stealing.
The defendant was also sentenced to pay QR200,000 in blood money to the victim’s family.
According to the case papers, the defendant was trying to sneak into a house when he was spotted by the owner and his two sons, local daily Al Raya reported on Sunday.
The trio moved to detain him and he responded by stabbing one of the sons with a pocketknife, causing him a deep wound in the hip.
As the father who was suffering from heart ailments tried to catch the thief, he was aggressed and he collapsed.
The doctor later said that the emotional shock especially after he saw the thief stab his son and the strenuous physical efforts resulted in the father’s death.
The thief managed to flee the house, but he left his headdress, his sandals and his mobile at the crime scene. He was eventually arrested and put on trial.
Theft crimes are very rare in Qatar.
