Muscat: A collision between two vehicles on Saturday morning took the lives of two people and injured another in the wilayat of Bidyah, eastern part of Oman. 

This was confirmed by an official of the Royal Oman Police (ROP) while talking to the Gulf News.

“A collision between two vehicles in Bidyah province, resulted in two deaths,” said police officials while describing the accident. Two brothers, Two Omani sisters died on the spot while the driver of another vehicle suffered severe injuries and was taken to the nearest hospital.

The reason behind the accident has yet to be ascertained. Speeding, negligence, use of mobile phones and fatigue driving are the major causes of fatalities and injuries in the country, according to ROP. 

In 2023, speeding caused 304 deaths and 1,037 injuries, marginally fewer than 334 deaths and 1,070 injuries in 2022. Speeding caused 1,009 accidents in 2022.

The second leading cause was negligence, resulting in 103 deaths and 245 injuries in 2023, a significant increase from 66 deaths and 234 injuries in 2022. Negligence-related accidents increased from 248 to 308. Reckless driving behaviour led to 80 deaths and 418 injuries in 2023, compared to 63 deaths and 433 injuries in 2022.

The ROP has called on motorists to drive carefully, adhere to speed limits and avoid dangerous overtaking, especially on single carriage roads in the interior areas of the country.
