Dubai: The Omani Ministry of Education has announced it is planning to Omanise the teaching profession and replace expat teachers with Omanis.

Making the announcement on its social media platforms, the Ministry of Education said it held a joint meeting with the Ministry of Labour last Thursday to discuss the ongoing efforts being made to Omanise the teaching professions as well as ways to prepare Omani cadres to replace expat teachers.

The meeting was attended by Dr Madeeha bint Ahmed Al Shaibani, Minister of Education, and Dr Mahad bin Saeed Baouin, Minister of Labour.

The ministry noted that the current statistics and indicators of the number of those enrolled in teacher preparation programmes reflect the rapid pace of the Omanisation , which hit 85 per cent in 2020.

It added that the number of Omanis enrolled in such programmes for the academic year 2020/2021 reached more than 6,000 citizens, in addition to 2,300 additional seats to be made available in Higher Educational institutions to prepare and train Omani teachers.

The ministry also said it is in the process of opening the door to receive applications for Omanis wishing to fill the position of teachers, adding that it has referred all available vacancies to the Ministry of Labour in order to help fill these positions with Omanis.
