Muscat: An eminent Islamic scholar believes several recent modern scientific discoveries have already been mentioned in the Quran.

Delivering a lecture on the Quran and modern science? at the City Amphitheatre in Qurum on Tuesday night, Dr Zakir Naik, an internationally renowned scholar on Islam and comparative religion, said: "Several scientific discoveries of the present age are already mentioned in the Holy Quran, which was revealed 1,426 years ago."

The 6,000-capacity open air theatre was packed with Muslims as well as non-Muslims as the Indian medical practitioner and Islamic scholar talked about how the Quran was attuned to modern science.

The lecture was organised by the Sultan Qaboos Centre for Islamic Culture and was followed by a lively question and answer session.

From the Big Bang theory of the creation of the Universe and the atom to current day scientific understanding of genetics and embryology, he quoted from the Quran and justified how these findings were mentioned in the Quran.

Dr Naik also pointed out that Islam prescribes universal brotherhood and rejects the thought that human beings have been created in castes or in different levels. He also said Allah made countries and tribes, so that humans can recognise each other.
