Muscat: 30.5 per cent of Omanis working in the private sector receive salaries that do not exceed 400 rials a month (Dh3,813), according to recent statistics.
This category accounted for the highest percentage in terms of the number of Omanis working in the sector with more than 62,000 nationals until the end of last June.
Many of those Omanis resigned from the private sector and joined government jobs, finding those jobs to be more attractive.
Some companies are believed to pay lower than the minimum wage, set by the Ministry of Manpower at 325 rials a month.
Ahmad Al Batashi, an Omani, told Gulf News that he left the private sector job and joined the government sector last July.
“I left the company I worked for more than six years as no incentives were given, the salary was not enough and no training was offered”, said Al Batashi.
More than 60,000 Omanis resigned from the private sector in 2014 alone, according to the Ministry of Manpower.
The Ministry of Manpower said the government was committed to limit the level of expatriates working in the private sector from 39 per cent to 33 per cent.
Meanwhile, the number of insured Omanis working in the private sector reached 204,591 working in 14,828 companies until last May, according to the latest statistics from the Public Authority for Social Insurance.
Most of the Omanis insured are between 26 to 30 years old, which constitutes 24,9 per cent.
