Muscat: An Omani national who was arrested in India in February over a molestation case has been released.

An official at the Consulate General of Oman in Mumbai told Gulf News over phone from India that the Omani national was released on bail but the case was still open. The official added that both the Consulate General of Oman in Mumbai and the Oman Embassy in New Delhi coordinated with Indian authorities to release the national as well as paying all the legal fees.

“We are working to close the case file as victim said she was not molested by the Omani,” the official said.

In February, the Omani national along with a Saudi national were arrested by Colaba police after a 52-year-old American woman reported that they molested her.

According to the reports, she had invited the Omani national to her room for a drink in the early morning in Taj Mahal hotel. When she returned from the toilet, she found the Omani along with his Saudi friend. Then, the Omani national left the room while the Saudi stayed. When she asked him to leave, he refused and molested her. The woman called the security for help and the Saudi was arrested. The Omani was later arrested at the airport when he was to travel back home to Oman.

Meanwhile, a 70-year-old Omani national was arrested in Hyderabad for allegedly marrying a minor girl, according to Indian media reports.

A marriage broker convinced the Omani national to get married to the minor girl, which is against the law.

An official at the Consulate General in Mumbai said the girl was carrying an identification card that said she was 19 years old, however, her real age was 17.

Four Omani nationals were jailed, but later released in India for different cases in the past two years.
