Oman Supreme Court upholds Sohar verdict
Seven Sohar protesters to serve five years in jail, as Sohar Criminal Court ruled
Muscat: Oman's Supreme Court has upheld the five-year prison term for Sohar protesters but ordered a retrial in the Ibri riot case.
Seven Sohar protesters were jailed for five years by the Sohar Criminal Court in June last year. The seven were charged with sabotaging public property, forcefully stopping work at government offices, blocking roads and disrupting traffic at the Industrial Area in Sohar.
The appeal of Hilal Al Alawi, Khamis Al Ajmi, Majid Ma'amari, Khalid Sheedi, Hilal Shezawi, Salem Ma'amari and Khalid Al Balushi has been overruled and the Sohar Criminal Court's verdict upheld.
At the same time, the Supreme Court has ordered a re-trial of suspects in the Ibri riot case.
The Ibri court had sentenced Haitham Al Abri, Abdullah Al Hinai, Ahmed Al Gharibi, Waleed Al Dhahi, Mohammad Al Huwaishel, Rashid Hamdan, Sultan Salim Al Balushi, Salim Mohammad Al Abri, Huthaifa Said, Moosa Khamis Al Jassasi and Qasim Said Al Mammari to three years in jail for taking Manpower Ministry employees hostage and preventing them from carrying out their duties.
