Muscat: Oman said on Tuesday it had helped with the release of an unidentified German citizen in Yemen following a request for assistance from Germany.

The assistance to release the German national from Sana’a came on the orders of Sultan Qaboos on humanitarian grounds.

The German was transported Tuesday evening from Sana’a to Muscat by the Omani Royal Air Force before his return to his country, the Omani foreign ministry said in a statement.

The short statement didn’t give further details.

Last April, Oman had helped coordinate the release of an American citizen in Yemen on behalf of the US.

Oman has positioned itself as a mediator in the region and is the only Gulf country that has not been involved in either side of the war.
