Cairo: Oman has announced that Sunday marks the first day of Eid Al Fitr, joining the other Gulf countries in determining Sunday as the start of the holy occasion.

Oman had started observing Ramadan one day after the five other member of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

A committee in charge of sighting the new moon of the month of Shawwal announced Saturday night that the moon was spotted, meaning that the first day of the new month and the Eid falls on Sunday, the Omani news agency ONA reported.

Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq congratulated citizens and expatriates on the occasion, urging them to strictly follow measures in place against the spread of the novel coronavirus.

He called for “continuation of solidarity and cooperation in dealing with this pandemic and full adherence to instructions and directives” enforced by state agencies, according to ONA.

Oman has tightened anti-virus precautions banning all gatherings during the Eid holiday.
