Hail, heavy rain lash interior Oman

Muscat: Interior regions in Oman witnessed heavy rain and even hailstorms in some areas, according to a volunteer group in Oman.

According to the group — Najat — formed on social media website Facebook and micro-blogging website Twitter, Sumayil and nearby areas received heavy rain on Sunday.

The group posted pictures of overflowing wadis and natural waterfalls created due to water cascading down the mountains following heavy rains. The group also posted pictures of hail that fell in Sumayil area.

“It is possible that the area around Sumayil is witnessing heavy rains as satellite images indicate such a possibility,” a spokesperson for the Director General of Meteorological and Air Navigation said.

However, he told Gulf News that the meteorological department had not officially registered any rainfall thus far. When asked about the posting of pictures of rain and hailstones on social media, he added that it was a distinct possibility.
