A ferry sunk off Oman’s coast on Tuesday

Muscat: A ferry headed from Oman’s Shannah Island to Masirah Island with 50 passengers on-board sunk on Tuesday morning.

All the passengers were rescued and no injuries were reported, according to the Royal Oman Police (ROP).

All the passengers were transported onto another ferry by the ROP and other citizens.

The ferry is believed to have sunk due to overloading, according to the police.

Ships leave Shannah port in Mahout province to Masirah Island to transport citizens, visitors, vehicles and goods on a daily basis.

Two incidents of ferries sinking occurred in 2014, with no casualties reported.

Dozens of collisions had been reported between ferries in the past three years, as some of these ferries are old and lack the minimum safety standards.
