COVID-19: Oman lockdown to begin tonight

People will not be allowed to venture outside their homes between 8pm and 5am

Muscat: Starting tonight, Oman goes into a lockdown from 8pm to 5am until April 8. The lockdown applies to all commercial activities as well individual and vehicular movements.

Royal Oman Police (ROP) spokesperson said that it would continue its role to deal with maintaining the safety and ensure that the rules are adhered to by general public. There will be traffic patrols and monitoring by the ROP across the country. Strict penalties will be handed down to the violators for non-adherence to stipulated rules.

Services that will not be affected during the lockdown include movement of essential and emergency-services vehicles, cleaning and sanitation vehicles, ambulances, and trucks with a capacity load of more than 3 tons.

Medical staff

The ROP spokesperson also indicated that movement will not be restricted for staff working in Oman’s airports, refineries and ports, vehicles used for transport of medical staff and health workers, arriving and departing travellers with only one accompanying person and with valid travel documents, media professionals required to work during the curfew hours, relief sector teams in the governorates and imams of mosques.

Brigadier General Muhammad al Kindi of Royal Oman Police said that owners of institutions, companies and stores to ensure sufficient time for staff to reach their homes after closure of work. All offices have rescheduled their operational timings to close before 7pm with super markets, working on a straight shift from 7am till 7pm without a break.
