Muscat: Royal Oman Police (ROP) has urged residents not to leave their cars unlocked or running as vehicle thieves are on the prowl even as two persons have been held on the charges of stealing vehicles.
"The two accused in car theft cases are wanted for some time and have been arrested by the Seeb Police Station," said Ali al Kasbi, spokesperson for the ROP's Public Relations Department.
He revealed that on interrogation, the suspects confessed to their crime.
In their confession, the suspects told police that they had planned the vehicle theft in Oman and smuggling to a neighbouring country with the help of an accomplish abroad.
The car was stolen from a car rental company in Muscat by one of the accused and another was planning to take it out of the country.
Al Kasbi said that following reports of vehicle thefts in the country the ROP had recently tightened their vigilance and introduced modern car theft preventive techniques. "We have also intensified patrols and tracking the suspects," he added.
He said that motorists leaving their cars running and unattended was making them easy prey to the vehicle thieves. "The car thieves also target vehicles parked in one place for a long period of times," he said.
He said those who fall prey to car theft should contact the ROP via the emergency number 9999.
