Manama: Shaikha Reema Al Sabah, wife of Kuwait’s ambassador in Washington, had added a new accolade to her list of distinguished activities and contributions in the US.

A specialised magazine last week named the member of the Kuwaiti ruling family among the top 100 party hosts in the US.

“Shaikha Reema Al Sabah is known for hosting purpose-driven fundraisers that are bridge-builders, attracting politicos from both sides of the aisle as well as Hollywood luminaries,” La Salonniere said.

“In 2018, her parties raised millions of dollars to support refugees and displaced women. [Monthly magazine] Marie Claire once noted that she has single-handedly strengthened ties between the US and Kuwait and changed our view of Arab women.”

Shaikha Reema is both a Goodwill Ambassador to UNHCR and a philanthropist who over the last 19 years was able to raise over $18 million through her gala dinners to support women and children causes, Kuwait News Agency (Kuna) said.

“I was honoured to have been selected among America’s 100 best party hosts in 2019,” Shaikha Reema said.

“I am grateful to be able to host events that help causes close to my heart and to attract power players who prove helpful for such causes,” she told Kuna.

Last week, the UN Women for Peace Association asked Shaikha Reema to speak at the UN as part of the celebration of International Women’s Day.

In 2018, the association honoured Shaikha Reema with the Peace Award for her extraordinary philanthropic work for over a decade, with former US Permanent Representative to the UN Nikki Haley describing her as “a doer, a mover, a shaker and a global game changer.”

Shaikha Reema was in 2011 on the list of the most powerful women in Washington.

The Salonniere said it compiled its list of America’s 100 best party hosts “after six months of querying social authorities and local in-the-know experts, ncluding journalists, philanthropists, not-for-profit fundraisers, social luminaries, event planners, and cultural and business leaders.

“This year’s list includes honourees from 33 US cities and represents a diverse and brilliantly creative group of people who share one common trait: an exceptional ability to leverage the power of parties to enhance the lives of others,” the magazine said.

“Social gatherings play a vital role in our lives and communities, whether to connect people, advance ideas, support causes, or promote joyfulness, and those who host them well provide a great gift to humanity,” Carla McDonald, The Salonniere’s founder and editor in chief, said.

“The Salonniere 100 is our way of honouring those who are extraordinary at hosting events with passion and purpose and using the power of parties to unite, enhance, and improve the lives of others.”

The list includes Jennifer Aniston, “the social glue that holds together the mover-and-shaker crowd in Hollywood, and Oprah Winfrey, “the media mogul and philanthropist who uses parties to raise awareness for important issues and connect and empower others.”
