Manama: A Kuwaiti columnist has been detained after he refused to pay a KD1,000 ($3,500) bail following his questioning in a case filed against him by the prime minister.

Mohammad Abdul Qader Al Jasem was questioned over claims he made on October 18 targeting the character and competence of Prime Minister Shaikh Nasser Al Mohammad.

The journalist denied the charges, saying they were "malicious" and refused to answer the questions of the public prosecutor.

Al Jasem who has faced several legal suits before will be questioned again today and his lawyers expressed hope that the public prosecutor would release him.
