Manama: Kuwait's municipality has pledged a zero-tolerance policy towards people barbecuing in non-allocated areas.

The warning, issued on Thursday, said that violators would be fined KD300 ($1,080) for breaking the rules.

"There are special areas where people are permitted to barbecue," Ahmad Al Subaih, the general director of Kuwait Municipality, said. "We will not tolerate any abuse of the facilities or a damage of the green zones," he said.

Kuwaitis and expatriates tend to use the sea front areas for gatherings and barbecuing is a common sight, particularly during the weekend.
