Cairo: An Egyptian employee at Kuwait's Education Ministry had died of COVID-19, becoming the first such fatality in the country's sector, the Kuwaiti daily Al Qabas reported.

The 45-year-old victim served as an accountant at the ministry's payroll department and worked over the past days on urgent matters related to salaries, according to the report.

He was one of two accountants who had been infected with the new coronavirus and his condition soon worsened. The other, also an Egyptian national, is still receiving treatment for the disease.

The Kuwaiti Education Ministry has recently recorded three virus cases, the third being an engineer in information systems management.

In recent weeks, Kuwait has seen an uptick in COVID-19 incidence rates, prompting the government to enforce a total curfew that continues until May 30.

The country so far has confirmed 17,568 coronavirus cases including 124 deaths.
