Manama: Promoting dialogue between different societies is the best way to avoid extremism, according to a Kuwait diplomat.
"Extremism of opinions and beliefs and disrespect for different cultures are great challenges that the world has to confront," Mishaal Al Hubail, said at the 65th United National General Assembly.
"Holding successful dialogue among civilizations and people is crucial and it requires a common genuine wish to combat extremist thoughts and acts," Al Hubail said.
The United Nations, non-government organisations and agencies should be organising meaningful discussions amongst societies, he added.
"The aim of the dialogue is to study the roots of difference and to tackle them. Kuwait has implemented a national plan, based on the importance of the interaction of civilizations, and is keen on supporting the UN's efforts to ensure the continuation and activation of dialogue among civilizations," he was quoted by Kuwait News Agency as saying.
Kuwait promotes a culture of peace, tolerance and moderation, to combat extremism, terrorism and violence, and to cooperate with regional and international agencies to reach a common understanding of human issues, he said.
According to Al Hubail, Kuwait has become steadily more tolerant of other cultures.
"People from about 120 countries, and with different cultures and religions, live in Kuwait and enjoy stability, tolerance, and respect," he said.
