Manama: A religious and political society in Bahrain on Wednesday called for the full protection of journalists by the interior ministry.

Al Asala, the expression of Salafism, said that several media people have been the target of hate emails and comments lately and should be given protection to enable them to carry out their work.

The society issued its call following a dawn attack on Jamal Zuwayyed, a journalist who said that he had been attacked by three masked assailants after he left the mosque where he offered the dawn (fajr) prayers.

"We strongly believe in the freedom of expression as guaranteed by the constitution and laws of the land," the society said. "We totally condemn the strange practices against journalists and which are alien to our culture," the society said.

According to Al Asala, verbal and physical attacks on journalists amounted to acts to terror and must be denounced as such.
