Manama: Malayalam newspaper Chandrika (Moonlight), the mouthpiece of the Indian Union Muslim League, has launched its Bahrain edition, becoming the third Indian newspaper to publish in the kingdom.

Madhyamam and Malayala Manorama are the other newspapers targeting the sizeable Indian community in the Kingdom.

The Sunday ceremony, attended by Bahrain's Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmad Al Khalifa, and Minister of State for External Affairs and Indian Union Muslim League National General Secretary E. Ahamed, coincided with the 30th anniversary of the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC).

Opportunity

Information Minister Dr Mohammad Abdul Gaffar welcomed the launch of the Middle East Chandrika as a consolidation of media relations between Bahrain and India and as a good media opportunity for the active Indian community living in Bahrain.

Chandrika was the first attempt by Malabar Muslims to have a newspaper to support their political party. It launched an edition in Dubai in August 2006.

In Bahrain, it will be represented by Al Wasat newspaper. Malayala Manorama is printed by Akhbar Al Khaleej, Bahrain's oldest surviving newspaper, while Madhyamam is printed by Al Ayam.
