Manama: A centenarian will have its house razed and re-built after a surprise visit by Bahrain's prime minister.

Fatima Bint Jian was in her house when Prince Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa went to visit her during a tour of the neighbourhood in Muharraq, Bahrain's second largest city, on Saturday to check the inhabitants' living conditions.

"I am very pleased with this surprise visit to our modest house and I am grateful that he listened to me," she told Al Watan daily.

Prince Khalifa ordered that the house be promptly razed and re-built.

According to Fatima Salman, Muharraq municipal council member who was on the tour, Fatima lived in the dilapidated house with her brother's wife and her daughters.

"She has no one to look after her and depends on the assistance she gets from benevolent people and the money she receives from the social development ministry," said Fatima, who made history in October by becoming the first and only woman in Bahrain to be elected to a municipal council.

Fatima and her relatives will be given a home in Muharraq until their new house is ready
