Manama: Bahrain has vowed to act firmly against websites accused of trying to foment sedition in the country.
King Hamad Bin Eisa Al Khalifa has said he instructed security agencies to deal “firmly” with cyber propagators of sedition and abusers of social media.
“I am fully convinced our strong national fabric is our prime defence line to keep our home front solid and foil any attempts to stir sedition and breaking ranks,” the monarch said Monday night , according to Bahrain’s news agency BNA.
“We should shun the misuse of social media that should be tools of reform, not destruction,” he added at a Ramadan gathering in Manama.
His remarks were made shortly after Bahraini authorities uncovered a network of destabilising electronic accounts operated in several countries including Iran, Qatar, Iraq and Germany.
The authorities said the network, run by wanted fugitives, is implementing a “systematic plan” to harm the image of Bahrain.
Bahraini Prime Minister Khalifa Bin Salman condemned at a cabinet meeting what her called “misleading attempts to sow sedition by spreading lies and rumours”. BNA quoted him as ordering “firm” dealing with such attempts.
