Cairo: A Bahraini court had issued varying jail sentences against 80 people convicted of violating COVID-19 rules as the country is seeking to limit the spread of the illness.

The Minor Criminal Court had handed down jail terms ranging from three to six months and fines from BD1,000 to 2,000 to the 80 defendants, a prosecution official said.

The defendants had been arrested for infringing government decisions that oblige wearing face masks in public places ,ban the gathering of more than five persons and put in place health precautions for barber shops, beauty parlours and coffee shops to contain the spread of COVID-19.

New measures

Bahrain so far has registered a total of 106,198 virus cases and 337 related fatalities.

The kingdom has imposed new measures as COVID-19 cases increase. They include curtailing the number of employees at government agencies by allowing up to 70 per cent of employees to work from home.

Other restrictions, due to take effect tomorrow (Sunday) for two weeks, include closing indoor gyms and swimming pools and limiting presence at social gatherings in homes at a maximum of 30 persons.
