Danish youth to march in support of Jasmine Revolution

Facebook initiative for freedom and liberty

Dubai: Join a street party for freedom and uprising. Thus reads the first line of a Facebook invitation that has circulated amongst Danish youth for the past month. So far the page has more than 1,700 followers and the number is growing.

Erik Storrud, one of the initiators, will lead the way when people march tonight in Copenhagen as a gesture of solidarity with those raising their voices for freedom and liberty in the Middle East. The gathering expects to travel to as many embassies of Middle Eastern nations, as possible.

"We want to show the involved Arab countries that we support their peoples' fight for rights," Storrud said to Gulf News in a telephone interview.

"We don't necessarily mean that our way of doing things is the right one. But we believe that the people should be able to choose for themselves — rather than a single person making all the choices for them."

He said the response towards the initiative has been very positive. "People keep asking me if there is anything they can do to help," he said.

According to Storrud, the event is also a political statement for people within Denmark. He thinks that it is important for young Danes to engage in issues outside of their country.
