The driver was taken to hospital by the Singapore Civil Defence Force
A large sinkhole opened at the junction of Tanjong Katong Road South and Mountbatten Road on Saturday, swallowing a black car and forcing the closure of part of the busy road.
The incident occurred at around 5.50pm, according to Singapore’s national water agency PUB. Dashcam footage circulating online shows the road suddenly caving in, creating a deep hole that trapped a vehicle.
Nearby workers reacted quickly, using a rope to pull the woman driver out of the sinkhole. She was conscious when Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers arrived and was taken to hospital. PUB later confirmed that she is able to walk and is undergoing further medical check-ups. The agency said it is staying in touch with her to provide support.
The car was hoisted out of the sinkhole with a crane on Sunday afternoon, while repair and recovery works continued at the site.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced early Sunday morning that Tanjong Katong Road South, between Mountbatten Road and the East Coast Parkway (ECP), will remain closed until further notice. LTA said it is working with PUB and the Building and Construction Authority to monitor the repairs and ensure road safety before reopening.
