Major fire erupts in Manila's Tondo residential district

Manila: A large-scale fire broke out on Wednesday, August 6, in a densely populated residential district near Aroma Compound along Road 10, Barangay 105, Tondo, Manila.

This prompted an extensive emergency response from firefighting and disaster management authorities.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire was first reported at 9:47 am and was immediately raised to first alarm status.

Within one minute, the blaze intensified, prompting authorities to escalate the alert to second alarm, as flames rapidly consumed a cluster of closely packed informal dwellings constructed from lightweight materials.

By 9:55 am, the situation had further deteriorated.

The fire was raised to a third alarm. In a reflection of the incident’s speed and magnitude, both fourth and fifth alarms were declared concurrently at 10:10 am.

At 10:17 a.m., the BFP elevated the response to Task Force Alpha, a designation that deploys firefighting teams from across the entire Metro Manila region.

Firefighters from multiple city districts, along with volunteer fire brigades, mobiliSed swiftly to the scene.

The emergency operation caused significant traffic congestion along surrounding roads as teams worked to contain the fire.

Personnel from the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) are conducting evacuation operations.

Many affected residents were seen carrying young children, elderly family members, and limited personal belongings as they fled their homes.

Local government units have begun establishing temporary evacuation centers and are coordinating the delivery of relief assistance for displaced families.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area to ensure unimpeded access for emergency responders and to safeguard civilian safety.
