Karachi: After Karachi, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) has decided to begin proper waste disposal services in two more cities of the province - Hyderabad and Kotri.

The decision to this effect was reached at the 13th meeting of SSWMB held with Sindh Chief Secretary Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah in chair. The meeting was informed that the SSWMB had received a letter from Hyderabad’s commissioner for launching of the municipal services by the solid waste management board in Hyderabad, the second largest city of the province. The Municipal Corporation of Kotri also passed a resolution to hand over the task of providing municipal services in the area to the SSWMB.

Sindh chief secretary said in the next step the SSWMB would start providing municipal services in Larkana, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, and Shaheed Benazirabad.

The meeting also approved the proposal of reserving 200 acres of land along the M-9 section of motorway between Karachi and Hyderabad for establishing a new landfill site near the city for the safe disposal of municipal waste. The new landfill will be built on modern lines and environmental impact study of the project will be undertaken.

The CS directed the managing-director of SSWMB to improve the functioning of the provincial waste management agency. He said the contracts signed with the companies given the task of municipal waste disposal in the city should be renewed on the basis of their performance.
