Islamabad: Pakistan's first liver transplant facility was commissioned on Saturday at the Shaikh Zayed Hospital in Lahore.

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani inaugurated the transplant centre, saying it would help save considerable foreign exchange.

Gilani said he had also ordered establishment of a liver transplant centre in Islamabad at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), which would be operational within six months.

He appreciated the allocation of land by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for the Benazir Bhutto Campus of the Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Dental College in Lahore and announced a grant of Rs180 million (Dh7.8 million) for the project.
