A 22-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her live-in partner in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday night after she reportedly refused to engage in prostitution, according to police and local media reports.

The incident took place in Siddhartha Nagar of B Savaram village, located in the Rajole area of Konaseema district. The victim, identified as Oleti Pushpa, had been living with Sheikh Shamma, also 22, an air-conditioning mechanic, for the past year following her separation from her husband.

Inspector Naresh Kumar of Rajole Police station said Shamma frequently consumed alcohol and was known to quarrel with Pushpa. On Wednesday evening, a heated altercation erupted between Shamma and Pushpa’s family members. When Pushpa intervened, he allegedly attacked her with a knife, stabbing her in the chest and leg.

“Her mother, Ganga, and brother, who tried to intervene, were also injured in the attack,” Inspector Kumar added. Pushpa died at the scene due to severe blood loss.

After the incident, Shamma fled and remains absconding. A murder case has been registered, and two police teams have been formed to trace and arrest the accused.
