Chennai: Six people, including a one-year-old child, were killed in a road accident in Tamil Nadu's Salem district early on Wednesday, police said.

According to police, the accident occurred when the van, which they were travelling, rammed into a truck from the rear at Sankari area of the district.

The deceased have been identified as Selvaraj, Arumugham (48), his wife Manjula (43), Palaniswami (47), his wife Pappathi (43) and granddaughter Sanjana (1).

Salem police told IANS that Palaniswami and Pappathi’s daughter, R.Priya (22) was married to Rajadurai of Salem. The couple decided to separate and both the families agreed upon the separation on mutual consent.

Priya's parents, along with relatives Arumugham, his wife Manjula and a family member Selvaraj reached Rajadurai’s place and took Priya and her daughter Sanjana back home.

A close relative Vicky was driving the mini-van.

When the van approached Sankari, it rammed into a parked truck killing six of its occupants.

Critically injured Priya and Vicky are undergoing treatment at the Medical college.

The bodies have been sent to Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College for post-mortem.
